Find the right wax

Five short questions. The ranking uses air temperature, snow type, application method, product form and whether the wax has to travel in a pocket.

What is the air temperature on the mountain?

Use the temperature where you will ride, not the forecast at home.

What type of snow is it?

Dirty snow needs dirt resistance and graphite. Wet snow needs hydrophobicity. Clean packed snow can use a standard formula.

How will you apply the wax?

An iron gives a deeper, longer-lasting layer. Without an iron you can still prepare in a hotel, car or on the mountain.

What product form do you want?

Block for the workshop, a pocket stick for the pack, or liquid for a thin coat without an iron.

Will you take the wax up the mountain?

A pocket stick or liquid bottle travels. A block is for the workshop, hotel or car park before you leave.

Drip a thin line, iron until the wax just melts, cool, scrape and brush. A thin layer glides better than a thick one.

Conditions

Why air temperature comes first

Snow crystals change with the air around them. Match temperature first, then snow type, hydrophobicity, dirt resistance and how you will apply the wax.

How do I choose the right wax?

Start with the expected temperature and snow conditions. Different waxes are designed to perform best in different conditions. If you're not sure which one to choose, use our Find the Right Wax guide.

Does the type of snow matter?

Yes. Fresh, groomed, artificial, hard-packed and wet snow behave differently. Temperature is the main factor when choosing your wax, while snow type helps refine the choice.

What is an all-temperature wax?

An all-temperature wax is designed to perform across a wider range of conditions. It's a convenient choice for changing weather, travel, or riders who prefer one versatile wax.

How often should I wax my skis or snowboard?

It depends on how often you ride, the snow conditions and the condition of your base. If the base starts to look dry or whitish, or you notice noticeably less glide, it's time to wax.

Still not sure which wax to choose?

Use our Find the Right Wax guide. Answer a few simple questions about temperature and snow conditions, and we'll recommend the best wax for your next ride.
